The
Savukoski area boasts hundreds of kilometers of waterways with excellent
sport fishing opportunities, beginning with the river Kemijoki and ending
with backwater streams with stocks of rainbow trout. The region has only a
few lakes, the largest being Lake Arajärvi and Kiurujärvi.
The recreational fishing area of Korvatunturi Fell comprises the headwaters
of the river Kemijoki with its tributaries from the mouth of the Uuraoja
stream down on to Kairijoki River and its tributaries. The rivers are
replenished with catch-size trout during the fishing season. The local fish
stock includes, among other fish, the whitefish and the grayling.
The Kemijoki and Kairijoki rivers are both ideal for spin- and fly fishing.
River Kairijoki is particularly suited for fly fishing due to its open
shores. Tenniöjoki River, a tributary of the Kemijoki, can also be
recommended for offering memorable fishing adventures.
Due to its particular type of fish stock, the
Nuorttijoki River, which flows into Lake Nuorttijärvi on the Russian side,
offers real challenges to both spoon-bait and fly fishing enthusiasts. The
Nuorttijoki River has spectacular scenery. At the approach of the
Finnish-Russian border zone, the riverbed narrows into a canyon that forces
the waters into a turbulent rush forward. It is not surprising that the
Nuortti attracts a faithful group of visitors who return here year after
year. The fisherman who has subdued a robust trout or a handsome
broad-finned grayling has discovered one of this river’s attractions, the
other being the charm of its rugged beauty.
